Cody Hybiak Wins in First Race of 2009May
15, 2009 --
Tucson,
Arizona Taking 6 months off and running a part-time schedule this season did not seem to affect HMS driver Cody Hybiak as he dominated the JR 2-4 division at Tucson Kart Club. After struggling in 2008 with an inconsistent kart, the HMS team made wholesale changes to the kart and set-up. With a Dover powered motor borrowed from teammate Mark Gorton, the team hit the track with plans of using this race for testing to get ready for races later on in the season. Cody drew the highest pill to start the night, meaning he had to start heat 1 in last place. After only having 3 practice laps, both driver and crew chief were unsure of how the kart would handle. After the first lap, it was apparant that both the kart and the driver were back to the caliber that led them to back-back championships in 2006 & 2007. During the first lap, Cody quickly made it to 3rd place and then made easy work of Carlos Martinez who has won every race so far in 2009. Cody then began working on Tommy Wunderlich. He tried to pass him down low twice only to have Wunderlich shut the door. After trying the high side and having Wunderlich move up the track, Cody pushed Wunderlich into the turn just enough to make the pass down low. Those were the only 3 laps that Cody didn't lead. Heat 2 and the first 11 laps of the main were dominated by the #18 kart. He won the second heat by half the track to qualify on the pole and then had a commanding straight away lead over Martinez in the main event before a caution came out on lap 11. That bunched up the field again for a 4 lap shoot-out. Cody got a 3-4 kart length lead and held on to claim his 20th career victory. "The new set-up and the Dover power felt amazing," said the excited driver after the race. His crew chief and dad added, "I couldn't be more proud of my driver, but I know we can make the kart even faster." The team will likely hit the track again in June 5.
