FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cody Hybiak Wins Finale of Arizona State Championship

October 11, 2008, Tucson, Arizona

In just his 4th career start in a 2 cycle kart, Cody Hybiak brought home the checkered flag in the finale of the Arizona State Championship Series.  Cody entered the day 4th in the 3 race series and needed to win in order to have a chance at victory.

The day started out on a positive note, with Cody drawing the low pill and starting on the pole of the first heat.  The only challenge he had was during the multiple restarts following a rash of cautions.  He led wire to wire and won by a straight away.  Between heats, the HMS team changed tires and air pressures as the weather warmed and the track took on rubber, adding grip to the track.

After starting on the pole, Cody had to start last for heat 2.  That didn't seem to stop him as he was in second place by the end of lap one after making several daring passes.  He was hot on the tail of multi-year track champion Joseph Schoepner.   He attempted to go low on the track to make a pass, but the gear and hub broke on his kart, causing him to finish in last.

During the intermission, the team feaverishly worked to change the gear and hub and pry it off of the axle.  The repairs were finished just in time for the race.  Cody took the green flag in third, but worked his way up to second by the end of the first lap, trailing points leader Austin Gerhart.  Cody tried several times to pass on the inside, but Gerhart shut the door.  On lap 4, Cody made a move to the outside on the back stretch and won the drag race into turn 3.  He extended his lead to a straight away before the caution flag waved, bunching the field back up.  A red flag came out a few laps later as Cody led again by nearly a straight away with 7 laps to go.   Following the restart, Cody again checked out and stretched his lead to half the track as the checkered flag flew.  Gerhart finished 2nd, giving him the Arizona State Championship by a mere 10 points.

"That was the most fun I had in a long time," Cody said afterward.   "The motor Ted (Tucholski of TMW) gave me was so awesome and the kart could go wherever I wanted to.  I was able to run the high line so I could pass whoever I wanted to."

After the victory, HMS announced that TMW will again be sponsoring the #18 Phenom in the Tucson Shootout Thanksgiving Weekend.

"I couldn't give Ted the championship, but at least I got him his first win," Cody said with a smile.

Cody's teammate and crew chief Jeff Hybiak also needed a win in order to have a chance at the championship, but he fought an ill-handling kart all day.  They threw a radical set-up change on for the main event and it worked as Jeff chased down his MRG/HMS teammate Mark Gorton until lap 7, when something in the steering column bound up and Jeff spun out.  He fought the kart the rest of the race and finished 4th.  Like Cody, he ended up 2nd in the Championship Points.

It was a great day for Gorton though as he celebrated his birthday with his 2nd career feature win.
