Cody Hybiak Wins For 2nd Time This SeasonMay
16, 2008,
Tucson,
Arizona Cody Hybiak battled a dusty, narrow track, a very late starting time, and some tough competition to bring home his 2nd victory of the season in the Jr 2-4 division at Tucson Kart Speedway. The windy conditions on Friday night caused for a very dusty racing surface. Very little rubber was put down and the competitors had a tough time finding the necessary grip to make it through the corners. In the first heat race, there were so many cautions that the race was called on lap 35, with only one green flag completed. On that one green flag lap, Cody had moved from 5th to 2nd place, which is where he finished. During the second heat, Cody was tight on the bumper of Chris Perry the first 7 laps. On the 8th lap, Perry bobbled, Cody ran into him and caused Perry to spin. The race director ruled that it was the #18's fault and put Cody in the rear for a green, white checkered restart. Cody came blazing from the back to move into 3rd in one lap and was gaining on the leaders, but slid out of the groove as he took the checkered flag. The 3rd place finish was good enough for an outside pole starting position. With difficult track conditions, the team made several big set-up changes. Early on, it looked like the changes did not work as Cody got freight trained to 5th place on the start after nearly spinning out in turn 1. He and fellow Icon driver Nick Parker began working their way to the front. After making several passes, Cody tried to pass Parker on the outside going into turn 3. When he saw he didn't have Parker cleared, he veered right, causing himself to spin. When the caution came out, the race director ruled it was Parker's fault, and put Cody in 5th place and Parker back to 7th. On the restart Cody and Parker again began working their way to the front. They picked their way to 2nd and 3rd place, but were a 1/4 track behind the leader Carlos Martinez. Martinez ran into lapped traffic, literally, and spun out while making a daring pass on the outside. No caution came out, and Cody inherited the lead. Cody and Parker navigated the lapped traffic perfectly and began to pull away. Cody was able to extend his lead to about 10 kart lengths as he took the checkered flag for his 17th career victory. Parker came home 2nd. "It feels so long since I won a race or even led a lap in a main event. When I took the lead I felt really calm, then I realized Nick was probably right behind me, so I panicked again," Cody said afterwards. Cody's dad, Jeff Hybiak seemed to be on his way to completing the HMS sweep. He also started on the outside pole and was also freight trained back to 5th place. He worked his way through the difficult traffic up to 2nd place, much faster than the leader when the caution came out. On the restart, Jeff got knocked loose going into turn 1 and lost the back-end of the kart in turn 2. Sitting backwards in the front of the field, several karts made contact with him before Dennis Smith hit him head on. Jeff was able to continue, but restarted in 7th place. The kart was visably damaged and he was unable to keep pace with the leaders after the first lap. He was able to make a few passes and came home in the 5th position. "All things considered, falling from 2nd to 5th really isn't that bad," the driver said afterwards. "I feel bad for all the karts that were damaged and I'm really sore. We have a lot of work to do to get the kart back together, but that's racing I guess." The team is back in action for the 8th race of the season on May 30.
