FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HMS Sweeps Season Finale at PhoenixNovember
18, 2007 The Hybiak Motorsports team was once again on the road to Phoenix this year for the 13th and final regular season race at AKA Super Speedway. Big challenges were ahead for the team as Cody Hybiak sat 4th in points and needing a big finish to climb into the 2nd place position. The #85 kart of Clayton Colclasure held the 2nd place points position. Jeff Hybiak, having already clinched the championship and not needing to race, decided to run the lesser powered 4 cycle flathead engine against the powerful OHV Animal engines. It looked to be a long day for the team after the first heat race. Cody started in the back row of his heat race and ran into trouble immediately as the karts in front of him played bumper cars. The melee sent the #52 of Kyle Niquette of Lake Havasu spinning right in front of Cody. Cody tried to brake, but ran right into the side of Niquette's kart. The kart was damaged, but Cody was able to continue. He struggled the entire race, finishing 6th when the checkered flag fell. Even worse from Cody, Colclasure won the heat race in commanding fashion. Jeff also had to start in the back row of his heat race and he too struggled to get through traffic. He was finally able to climb into the 3rd position, but by then the #74 kart of Eddie Bonine and the #47 of Bernie Lacotta were nearly a straight away ahead. The team made some minor adjustments for the 2nd heat race as both Hybiaks would be starting on the front row. Things looked a little better for the drivers despite ill-handling karts. Cody was able to bide his time behind the #10x kart of Tyler Mecl until he got enough momentum to pass him with about 6 laps to go. He still couldn't shake Mecl, but did hang on for the win. Jeff started his race on the pole, but got loose on the 2nd lap and gave way to Bonine. The rest of the race was uneventful as Bonine, Hybiak, and Lacotta broke away from the rest of the pack. For Cody's race, Colclasure would be on the pole, while Cody was stuck starting 5th after his lackluster first heat race. The team made a chassis, tire, and air pressure adjustment to try and make the kart better. On the start the lead karts again played bumper cars into turn one, but fell into a line going into turn 3. Cody was still in the 5th position and Colclasure was getting away from the pack. The first person in front of Cody was the AKA Champion and national racer Tye Mihocko. Cody made an exciting move going from the high side to the low side to dive underneath Mihocko going into turn one. Now in fourth, Cody began tracking down the karts of Mecl, the #95 of Andrew Earle, and Colclasure. A few laps later, Colclasure bobbled in turn 3 and again in turn 2, which allowed Mecl, Earle, and Hybiak to all catch him. Mecl caught him in turn 1 and the two battle through the corner. Colclasure got caught on the outside, but Mecl also bobbled. Earle and Hybiak also took advantage and passed Colclasure down the back stretch. In turn 4, Mecl got really loose and gave way to Earle, with Hybiak in tow. As Earle and Hybiak broke away from the pack, Hybiak patiently waited for his chance. He finally got a run on Earle and got alongside him down the front stretch. With Hybiak on the inside and Earle on the outside Hybiak emerged with the lead down the back stretch. He quickly extended his lead to nearly 10 kart lengths with 4 laps to go when Earle and the #2 kart of Gavin Weidman made contact in turn 1, causing both to spin. The caution would bunch up the field for a 3 lap shootout. With Colclasure back in 5th place, Hybiak could coast to the 2nd place points position. Not knowing where everyone was at, Hybiak left no question as to who would emerge victorious as he again extended his lead to over 10 kart lengths as he took the checkered flag in his MRG Racing Icon. "We finally got this kart to be fast here!" an excited driver said afterwards. "That was the most fun I've had driving that kart. It was just so fast off the corners and handled so well." The animal feature event again started with a Bonine, Lacotta, Hybiak break away. Bonine led, but had Lacotta and Hybiak stalking him closely. On lap 3, Bonine got really loose in turn 4 and Lacotta and Hybiak took advantage and climbed to the front. Something must have broke on Bonine's kart because he would pull off the track moments later. The race stayed green and Hybiak continued to follow Lacotta, just waiting for an opportunity to take the lead. Around lap 7, Lacotta would overshoot his entry into turn 1, which gave Hybiak enough room to take the point. From there it was easy sailing for Hybiak and his LivePrayer.com Phenom. "I've got to have the best crew chief out there," Jeff said afterwards. "Cody promised me at the beginning of the day that by the main event, I would have the fastest kart out there. He was dead on again. As the day went on, each change helped so much. I was just cruising around the kart was so easy to drive." The victories were Cody's 2nd this season and it was Jeff's 9th victory in 13 regular season races there this season. The team is back in action on Saturday for the 3rd annual Tucson Shootout.
