Hybiak Wins Double Points Race in PhoenixJeff wins feature, Cody wins Trophy DashOctober
13, 2007 Hybiak Motorsports driver Jeff Hybiak won his final regular season race of the season at AKA Speedway to clinch the track championship. In Jeff's first heat race he started in the back of the pack, but only needed to take a green flag to claim the track championship. He did that, but that was about it. He tried to make a pass on the outside on lap 3, got loose and fell back nearly a straight away behind the leader. He continued to struggle and pulled off the track in last place. "The kart was terrible. It had no grip and just felt slow," the driver said later. "We were testing some new set-ups, but they obviously didn't work." Crew chief Cody put the #30 LivePrayer.com Phenom back to the baseline set-up for the second heat. The kart was better, but still barely good enough to hold off the always fast Dicky Dudd. Dudd was right on Jeff's bumper the entire race, but couldn't quite pass him. "We still needed it to driver better for the main. I knew Dicky would be fast so I gave Cody free reign to make any changes he thought I needed," Jeff said later. The 11 year old crew chief changed tires, gearing, and air pressures, three big changes that were all perfectly executed. With Dudd starting on the pole and Jeff starting third, the two took off from the field. Jeff got under Dudd on lap two, but in two laps Dudd passed Jeff back. Jeff tailed Dudd for three more laps before the 21 kart slid coming off of turn 2. Jeff made his move and stuck it. From there Jeff took off, with the only problem being when he encountered a lapped kart with 8 laps to go. That allowed Dudd to again close on Jeff, but he again pulled away, taking the checkered flag with nearly a straightaway lead. "The kart has never handled that good. After lap 8 when the tires came in, I felt like it was on rails. All I had to do was hang on," said the exhausted driver. The win was also a milestone victory for the HMS team as the #30 kart claimed the 30th victory in HMS history. It was also the teams 25th victory in 2007, and Jeff's 10th this year. Fellow HMS driver Cody Hybiak started the night off on the right foot by claiming his 5th career trophy dash win in six attempts. He held off a hard charge from national driver and AKA Track Champion Tye Mihoko in the four lap sprint. The two would continue their battle in the 2nd heat race, with several lead changes. Cody ended up leading the last lap. He qualified on the pole for the feature, but fell back to fifth before climbing back to finish third. Cody & Jeff are back in action in two weeks for the final two rounds of the Arizona State Championships. Both drivers are currently second in the series, but need two victories to claim the state championship.
