FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cody Wins in Dominating Fashion

September 14, 2007, Tucson, Arizona

Hybiak Motorsports driver Cody Hybiak broke out of his recent slump by dominating the Jr 1-4 race on Friday night.

With the team going back to the basics on Cody’s Phantom Icon chassis, the first heat looked promising as Cody moved from a 3rd place starting position to the point by lap 2.  However, at the halfway point his motor started smoking badly and losing power on the straights.  It looked like his string of bad luck was about to continue.   His quarter of a lap lead quickly faded back to five or six kart lengths.  His motor got him to the checkered flag.

A blown head gasket had the team frantically changing motors before heat 2.  The team fired the motor just in time to make it to the grid.  This time Cody was starting 5th.  He patiently worked his way to the front and this time extended his lead to nearly half a lap to claim his 13th career pole position.

The team wavered on what adjustments to make for the main event, knowing they didn’t want to beat themselves.  After a long discussion and good feedback from the driver on what the kart was doing, they decided to change tires, gearing, and air pressures.

“Cody taught me at the New Mexico State Championship that you’re better off to be the aggressor than to let them catch you,” crew chief Jeff said after the race.

The bold move paid off as Cody’s only challenge came on the initial start.  As he got up to speed he pulled away while an exciting 3 way battle for second occurred.  Conner Turner finished a strong night by holding off a ferocious charge by Carlos Martinez, who ended up third.  By the time Cody took the checkered flag he was half the track ahead of 2nd place.

“Most nights I want the race to be bumper to bumper the entire way, but after all the bad luck I had my goal tonight was to win by half a lap,” Cody said afterward.  “I’m just glad we were so aggressive on our changes because my kart was starting to get tight at the end.”

The sweep was Cody’s first sweep of all the races since March 18.  It also marked his first win since June 29.

“We needed this badly,” Jeff said later.  “I could see Cody doubting himself, the equipment, and his crew chief.  I know I was doubting everything except Cody’s driving ability.  That kid can really drive and he proved that tonight.  It is just up to me to give him the kart that he needs.”

Teammate Tyler Hybiak was not as fortunate as Cody, showing that the fastest kart doesn’t always win the race.  The rookie driver spun, not once, not twice, not three times, not four times, but FIVE times while trying to pass a slower kart on the outside of the corner.  Each time he was able to close the gap on the leader but was unable to complete the pass despite being much faster.  He ended up third.

It is another short week for HMS as they are back in action next Saturday at AKA Super Speedway in Phoenix.
