Cody’s Racing Diary

November 25, 2006
Cody got his first career win. Here is what he was feeling…….

With five to go a caution saved my life and I was hoping it would never end. Then one lap to go to green, better now than never. The green flag waves, five to go in a race. The checkered flag is in seeing distance, around the corner. Every bump made me more and more nervous. I was counting down every corner, and then only two more corners were left. I went into 3, out of 4, that led me right to the checkered. I’ve never been more nervous in any other race. I got out of my kart with jelly as knees. I’ve never been so happy a race would be over than that one. I just like the fact that I finally have a win under my belt!

Hybiak Motor Sports had a good night. First of all my dad started off on the pole and got freight-trained around lap 3. He went back to fourth and before the end of the race he worked all the way back to second. My race was interesting, due to starting in the back, 7th out of 9 actually. I was really digging and after a couple of laps I was in 5th. But unfortunately I got freight-trained and went back to 7th. Using people to pass sure did help, I finished 6th because of it.

Heat 2: My dad started in the back and right in the first part of the race he survived the big crash. He worked all the way to 2nd at the end of the race. I started 3rd in my race and all of a sudden I take the lead. I led until lap 7 and Jacob Stone took the lead. We make contact and I try to battle back, but finish 2nd.

For my dad’s main he came off of two 2nd place finishes and went back to 4th early. He did the perfect trick and used the opposing karts to get to 2nd. That’s where he finished the race too. For my main I started 4th and to start off the race I was stuck on the high line. I did still manage to stay in 4th but everybody else was gone. I did still manage to finish 4th.

Hybiak Motor Sports had a good night. My first and only heat was pretty fun. I started second last and around the mid-point of the race I was leading. After that I led the last laps and won my heat. My dad started outside pole (for his heat) and took the lead going into turn one. He led every single lap. My main I started pole and led the first six laps and was then passed by Paul French from Phoenix. He pulled away but I held on to second to win my first championship. My dad led the first portion of the race and was spun out right before halfway. He worked up to third with five to go but that was all he had. He finished third. Good night overall.

A so-so night for Hybiak Motor Sports. With me running the trophy dash I started pole due to an absent driver. The race was tough because of Nick Parker who was just flying. But I started on the pole and led every lap. I forgot to thank Corryn for the good tires she gave me.

My dad’s first heat was a bad one and throughout the race he struggled to get the handle of the kart. By my race it was the AKA SuperSpeedway, three wide through the corners, running in a five or six kart pack, you bump drafted to get ahead of somebody, and I was flat-footing it. I went from starting spot 5th to 2nd at one point to finishing 5th.

In the 2nd heat, my dad got the handle this time and led the most laps. Then on lap seven slid a little bit and lost the lead to Rick Spencer and finished there. My other heat I started 4th and by lap 2 I was up to second. Going for the lead on lap 3 I lost the handle and finished 6th.

My dad did a crazy set up (that I gave him) for the main and was going for the lead on lap 5. With Spencer as the leader him and my dad barely touch and sends Spencer’s tire flying off. My dad led the rest winning his second feature in a row. I exited my main after a lap 1 accident that bent my rim and flattened my tire.

It was a good and bad day for Hybiak Motorsports. The best of the night for me is the first two heats. I started outside pole to Tye Mihoko. He beat me into turn one and slid out of two and I take the lead. I led all the laps and win heat race #1. My dad started outside pole as well. After a couple of laps he takes the lead as well. He leads the rest and wins. The next heat I started second last and before finishing the first lap I take the lead again. When I finished I had a half-a-track lead over second. My dad came through the back fast and had the lead by the end of his second heat race. My main was just me and Mihoko until lap 15 and (after getting the rolled black flag earlier) I totally ran him over and got put to the back. Spinning again put me in fourth.

My dad actually did it! His goal at the beginning of the year was to beat Rick Spencer (in a main event) and he finally did. He was fast all night and I felt great seeing it. Next time it’s my turn.

What a night for Hybiak Motorsports.  Phoenix has taken the night to the next level by doing two mains, one of them being double points.  Starting with the double points main my dad and Rick Spencer started the unbelievable Tucson Triumph by getting one-two at the AKA speedway.  The second part of the Tucson Triumph was in my race set by myself and Nick Parker by an early sandwich to Jacob Stone.  I take the lead and on lap two then #2 of Gavin Weidman spanks the wall and brings out the red flag.  In those two laps I found out that I have a vibration (after the race a lug nut came off was the vibration.)  By lap five Parker and Stone are the top two.  We check out and Parker ends up winning.  A first and a third place for Tucson.

The real race night started now.  My dad and Spencer once again finish first and second but really check out now.  What a night for Tucson.  My (first heat) race was terrible, right down to Paul French spinning me out to me spinning out Tim Ward and still finish third.  I was everywhere at once! My dad and Spencer would have gotten the third one-two of the night (in the 2nd heat race).  The only person in their way is Charlie Eckman.  I got together with everybody this time (in the 2nd heat race).   By the last lap Tye Mihoko, Tim Ward, and myself are third, fourth and fifth.   I would have started third for the main if I pass Ward.  I took out Ward earlier so I backed off.

My dad’s main was a wonderful third sweep for Tucson in Phoenix (Rick and my dad 1-2).  My class it was the start that messed me up.  Everybody did slide jobs on me who passed me.  I got by two of them when my kart got too loose and finished third.

It was almost the best race ever for me and my dad altogether. My first race ended up with me starting fourth out of five contestants. I moved up fast and by lap two I was in second. Me and the 15 of Nick Parker absolutely dominated and a couple of times I could manage to stick my nose in, but just couldn’t do it. A close second for me. My dad’s race was extremely fun to watch. He started fifth out of seven karts and was in a battle all race long. Good race, ended up fourth. Back to my race I started outside pole with the 26 of Conner Turner on the pole. I got ahead of Conner, but Nick passes me! Once again we pull away from everybody, and I do whatever I can to pass Nick and end up as another second. My dad had a run in with another Parker, Thomas, the 2005 champion, and both went to the back and my dad works his way back to fifth. For the main I started second to Nick Parker and once again we pull away and I screw up and slide up the track and stayed the same distance around the track until I get a caution around the end of the race and I gave Nick a little slide job coming out of turn four and I lead my first ever main event lap but the exact same place the next lap Nick does a slide job to me and that was it. A very close second for me. My dad’s race went out a okay, since around lap twelve he finally passed somebody for third. The excellence of his race ended up very happy. Also special thanks to Ashley, Emily, Taylor, and Dennis Helton, who supported us all the way from Indianapolis.

The best day ever for HMS!!!! Due to rain we had 25 minutes to get everything done before the race. My dad went first and won another trophy dash! My race was next. I started outside pole. I ended up leading every single lap. For my dad’s race he started sixth. He moved up to fourth, stayed there all race for a decent finish. Back to my race….I started third. I made it to second, but couldn’t catch the leader. For my dad’s heat he started third and led most of the race, but got passed at the very end of the race.

For my main I started outside pole and was beating on the leader! (Well for 3 laps anyway.) I sort of spun out trying to get by him. I still finished second. For my dad’s race, he started third and his lowest position in the entire race was second! That’s right, he took the lead twice, and finished second! I told you it is the best day ever for HMS!

This was the best run for one of the Hybiak Motor Sports drivers. The other one had engine problems. It started out with my race. It was a really good run with me doing slide jobs for third place. Finally I went back to fourth on the final lap and going into the final corner I spun out of fourth and finished dead last. For my second heat I stayed in third place for the entire race, and battling the exact same person in the first heat (the person who I battled happened to be Jacob Stone.) I just barley finish behind Stone and finish third. For the main I start sixth because of my first heat screw-up. The amazing thing is that I made it up to third by the first lap. Once again I am shone beating on Stone’s back bumper for second. But by half way I was alone on the racetrack. The best part is that I didn’t lose any spots. So I ended up third, tied with my best Phoenix race ever. Not bad, huh?

Cody is still calming down after another run-in with the same driver that has taken him out 4 times so far this year. He may not have an entry this week.

May 12 & 13, 2006
Friday was another great run for Hybiak Motor Sports. The night started out with me starting fifth in the first heat race. I moved up quick and by lap four I was the leader. Luckily, I held off Tim Ward from Phoenix for the win. I spent my dad’s first heat race in my kart. But I heard he was flying. He almost had fourth coming to the checkered. After starting fifth in the first heat I started third in the second heat race. All race long I didn’t gain but I didn’t lose. Going into turn 3 with one lap to go Ward almost passed me going around the outside. I still managed third. My dad’s next race I was actually able to watch. Boy was he fast. He stayed in front all race long. The only person to beat him was Tucson’s own Rick Spencer. For the main event starting position I was happy to see my second main event pole in a row. Fourth was the other Hybiak Motor Sports starting position. For my race the main event start was horrible. Two people blew right by me on the start of the race (Nick Parker and Tye Mihoko.) Late in the race I found myself and, you guessed it, Tim Ward. He would pass me and I’d do a crossover. Finally on lap 17, he passed me for good (NOTE: our main event was supposed to be 15 laps.) The race ended with me in fourth. There was something exciting about my dad’s race, he was always racing people. He stayed in third all race, stayed with the leaders back bumper, and they pulled away from fourth. There was a caution with 5 laps to go, but there was something wrong with the kart, and fourth was about to pass him. But he still held him off for third. Recap, fourth and third was the Hybiak Motor Sports finishes.

On Saturday we didn’t have the best Phoenix race. The heat races were the most horrible. The Jr 1 had to run the high groove too. I got spun out trying to pass. I finished fifth in the first heat race. My dad had problems with his engine in the first heat race. He was racing for last. In my second heat race I got ran over by Jacob Stone, and LUKAS KARLSSON and KLAYTON COLCLASURE
almost spun me out. I still finished fifth. My dad had even more problems with his engine. For the main we both started second last for the main. My dad made his way all the way back to fourth and stayed there. For mine I got up to sixth by lap three and around lap 5 I moved into fifth. Well I stayed there and my dad moved up 4 positions, and I moved up 5. Pretty good, huh?

April 29, 2006
Hybiak Motor Sports has had some good runs this year and this is the best out of all of them. The night started out with the animal class and they really were animals! My dad made it three wide almost every time he passed. He finished third. When it came to my heat race once I got the lead I checked out. I started outside pole so it didn’t really matter. Back to my dad’s 2nd heat race…. He went through to finish second. My second heat race I started fourth, a chance to move to the front. I moved to the front, alright, I won. It was fun to race from the back instead of just checking out. For the main events I started on the pole and my dad started third. For my dads main event he stayed in third the entire race and got a challenge at the end, but held him off. For my main event I fell back to second and when the crossed flags waved I fell into third. That was the end of the race, a pair of thirds for Hybiak Motor Sports.

April 14, 2006
It was the best night of the year for Hybiak Motor Sports! In my dads first heat he made his way to the front coming from the back up to second. The person who beat my dad was the person who hasn’t lost a main event finish in Tucson and Phoenix. Then when my first heat race came I started on the pole and Nick Parker was right beside me. The race started out as I led the first few laps and then Nick Parker struck passing me going into one. I attempted a cross over going into turn 3. We both spun out and got put to the back. I made my way up to second in that race. My dad’s race came up starting on the outside pole. He had a fast kart starting beside him and couldn’t get to the inside until he lost a spot. The race stayed about the same way but dropped back another spot. He was right on Rick Spencer’s back bumper for third (Rick Spencer hasn’t lost a main event finish this year.) He ended up finishing fourth. I started in the back in the next heat race. The race started out as me and another person battling for second finally I had enough track to move into second place. I stayed a safe distance away from first and third the entire race. For the mains we each started third. My dad’s race started out with him moving to second. Third place was right on his back bumper the entire race. Third place was trying everything to pass my dad and my dad held him off. SECOND! My race started out with me moving to second too. I was so close to take the lead but couldn’t. Me hanging on to second all of the main event. But the real question is why hasn’t Mihoko passed me yet. With the last caution of the race the leader, Nick Parker, punted lapped traffic. The race took the last lap when Mihoko almost spun me. I wanted to hang on to second. But Mihoko passed me and I settled for third. For the first time this year, both Hybiaks are on the podium.

April 8, 2006
It was a so-so day for Hybiak Motor Sports. The first part of the day was the good part. I barely won my first heat race at Phoenix and my dad (Jeff Hybiak) finished third. Then I ran over somebody and was out of the race in the second heat. My dad once again finished third. For the main event me and my dad started sixth. We did all we could and I finished seventh and my dad finished third.
